Unless you never turn the TV on, odds are, youve seen at least a few of the latest Capital One credit card commercials with either Alec Baldwin or Jimmy Fallon. These two funny men are proudly selling debt to consumers around the nation.

Just when we thought that the credit card delinquency rate in the U.S. may have bottomed out, it resumed its fall in December, according to the latest data from Moodys Credit Card Indices. The late payments rate had remained virtually unchanged in the previous four months. Much more expected was the reported fall in the rate measuring the U.S. credit card defaults, as its uptick in November was widely considered to be a one-off aberration from the long-term downward trend.

There is little doubt that it has become more difficult to get approved for new credit in these challenging economic times.  In response to sluggish employment and a stagnant economy, most lenders are still operating in a risk-averse mode and only approving those applicants with the most stellar credentials (high credit scores, high incomes, large down payments).  It gets even harder and more frustrating for those people who may have some degree of negative payment history showing on their credit reports and are trying to re-establish their credit history.
