Dear Credit Karma… Credit Scores & Credit Reports

Dear Credit Karma,
Why is my credit score different from the same company?

Credit Karma’s credit score comes from credit bureau TransUnion, which calculates two primary credit scores: the TransRisk, which is what Credit Karma uses, and the Vantage Score, with a range up to 990. Credit bureaus and credit score-providing companies use different scoring models, even within the same bureau, depending on what type of information the institution that requests the score is looking for. For example, mortgage companies will get a different score than a company providing auto loans, since they are looking for different types of credit history and credit factors.

Differences between scores are not really all that significant because it shows two different ways to measure your same credit report information. For the purposes of monitoring your credit score to manage your credit health, what is important is sticking to one credit scoring model, such as Credit Karma’s, to monitor your credit behavior and how its impacting your score over time.

Dear Credit Karma,
My report has incorrect information, how can I correct this?

You would be surprised how often lenders and credit bureaus report incorrectly on consumer credit reports, which will likely take a hit to your credit score. The first step if you notice an inaccuracy on your credit report is to investigate by getting a free credit report from www.AnnualCreditReport.com to double-check the incorrect information. Once you confirm that there are credit report blunders to fix, check out Credit Karma’s step by step guide on how to wipe your report clean and polish up your credit score.

In the event that the information on your TransUnion credit report from www.AnnualCreditReport.com does not match up with the information on your Credit Karma Credit Report Card, please let us know.
